The third and final presidential debate, in Las Vegas tonight, will be uncivil at best, a mud-fight at worst. In the build-up, Donald Trump has said that Hillary Clinton should take a drug test before taking the stage. While continuing to insist that he can win, the Republican nominee also seems to be preparing for defeat, saying that both the campaign and the election on November 8th are “rigged” against him. Mrs Clinton, meanwhile, has seen more of her campaign’s hacked private e-mails published online, as well as interview notes from a State Department official that, shorn of context, look incriminating. Her formidable polling lead means this debate matters less than the previous two. But it will provide something else: a last chance for Mrs Clinton to explain, with tens of millions watching, what her presidency would actually be for, beyond keeping Mr Trump out of the White House.
